June 2026 Iowa Sports Betting Report: $185M Handle as a Cold Month for the Books Cuts Revenue 21%
Iowa's June 2026 IRGC numbers show handle easing only slightly to $185.4 million, down 3% from May. The bigger story is the hold: at just 8.9%, June was a bettor-friendly month, and operator revenue fell far faster than handle — down 21% to $16.4 million.
Month at a glance
| Total handle | $185,417,064 −3.0% vs May |
|---|---|
| Operator net receipts | $16,413,988 −21.0% vs May |
| Hold percentage | 8.9% −2.0pp vs May |
| Total payouts to bettors | $169,003,076 |
| State tax remitted | $1,107,905 −20.9% vs May |
| Online handle | $176,733,268 (95.3%) |
| Retail handle | $8,683,797 (4.7%) |
Handle slipped for a second straight month, from May's $191.1M to $185.4M — the shallow part of the annual summer lull between the basketball and football calendars. But handle isn't the headline here. The hold rate fell to 8.9%, well below May's 10.9%, so the books simply kept less of every dollar wagered. That single swing is why revenue dropped five times faster than handle did.
A low-hold month explains the revenue drop
June was a good month to be an Iowa bettor. A 8.9% statewide hold is near the low end of what Iowa's market has produced in the past two years, and it lands squarely on the bettors' side of variance — more favorites cashing, fewer parlays busting. The mechanics:
| Handle change vs May | −3.0% ($185.4M vs $191.1M) |
|---|---|
| Revenue change vs May | −21.0% ($16.4M vs $20.8M) |
| Hold change vs May | 8.9% vs 10.9% (−2.0pp) |
When hold compresses two full points on a $185M base, that's roughly $3.7M of revenue that stayed in bettors' accounts rather than moving to the operators' win column. Nothing structural changed — this is the normal give-and-take of a lower-volume summer month when a few results break the public's way.
The DraftKings hold reset
May's story was DraftKings winning more per dollar. June flipped it. DraftKings kept its handle almost perfectly flat but gave back most of the extra margin it had banked in May:
| DraftKings online handle | $71.5M (−0.7% vs May) |
|---|---|
| DraftKings net receipts | $5.86M (−27.5% vs May) |
| DraftKings hold | 8.2% (vs 11.2% May) |
Same volume, much lower hold. That's the clearest illustration of the month: the market leader didn't lose customers, it just held them at a below-average rate. Read the May and June DraftKings figures together and they average out close to the operator's long-run number.
Circa Sports loses again
Circa Sports posted negative net receipts of −$2,738 on $1.47M of online handle — a second consecutive losing month after May's −$46,425. The June loss is tiny, effectively break-even, but the back-to-back sub-zero result is worth logging for an operator whose low-vig, sharp-friendly model naturally runs thinner margins than its rivals. On a book this small, one or two heavy favorites cashing is enough to tip a month red.
Online handle by operator (June 2026)

| SuperBook American Wagering Inc. | $17.3M | 9.8% | $1.4M | 7.9% |
| bet365 Hillside (Iowa) LLC | $14.4M | 8.1% | $1.3M | 9.1% |
| Fanatics Sportsbook FBG Iowa LLC | $11.1M | 6.3% | $862K | 7.8% |
| BetMGM BetMGM, LLC | $10.2M | 5.8% | $1.1M | 10.5% |
| ESPN BET Penn Sports Interactive, LLC | $4.0M | 2.2% | $379K | 9.6% |
| BetRivers Rush Street Interactive IA, LLC | $2.0M | 1.1% | $208K | 10.5% |

| Bally Bet Bally's Management Group, LLC | $684K | 0.4% | $84K | 12.3% |
DraftKings and FanDuel combined for $115.7M in online handle — 65.5% share, holding the duopoly's grip on roughly two-thirds of the market. Behind them, SuperBook stayed clear at #3 on $17.3M, and bet365 ($14.4M) edged ahead of Fanatics ($11.1M) and BetMGM ($10.2M) in the mid-tier.
Sporttrade goes dark
One operator disappeared from the online column entirely. Sporttrade (Sporttrade Iowa LLC) reported $0 in handle for June after taking $252K in May. The exchange-style book has been Iowa's smallest active operator for months, so a zero month leaves ten operators taking online wagers in the state. Whether this is a temporary pause or a longer wind-down is worth watching in July.
June closes fiscal year 2026
June is the final month of Iowa's fiscal year, and the IRGC's year-end tally confirmed a record sports betting year. For FY2026 (July 2025 through June 2026), Iowans wagered $2.87 billion on sports, producing $284.5 million in operator revenue and $19.19 million in state sports wagering tax — up more than 18% year over year on the tax line. Sports betting is a small slice of the state's overall gaming tax haul, which topped $331 million for the fiscal year including casino revenue.
State tax under SF 605
June generated $1.11 million in state tax from operator revenue, the sixth full month under the SF 605 player-side withholding regime. The month-over-month decline simply tracks the lower operator revenue — a soft-hold month means a smaller 6.75% tax base. What to watch in July
- Hold normalization — after a soft 8.9% in June, does the statewide hold snap back toward double digits?
- MLB midseason — baseball carries summer handle, and the All-Star break is a live-betting draw.
- World Cup summer — soccer interest runs high across June and July; watch retail counters for the bump.
- Circa's streak — a third straight losing month would move this from noise to a genuine trend.
- Sporttrade — does the exchange return to the report, or stay at zero?
